Amy Marion is an ECC Regional Manager at RapidSOS and works closely with RapidSOS’s network of over 5,200 Emergency Communication Centers (ECCs). Amy joined RapidSOS in 2019 and previously worked as a 911 telecommunicator, 911 supervisor, and 911 coordinator. We sat down with Amy to learn about her important role in getting our life-saving technology into the hands of 911 first responders.
Q: What is your role, and how long have you been working at RapidSOS?
A: I am currently an ECC Regional Manager for the Northeast region. I have been with RapidSOS for a little over a year and half now. I started in November of 2019 and will be moving into a Regional Manager role in July, where I will still be working with Public Safety but at more of a state-level rather than directly with the Emergency Communications Centers.
Q: What brought you to RapidSOS?
A: I was first introduced to our CEO, Michael Martin, at a conference, where he was speaking about RapidSOS, and I thought the mission sounded great and was very impressed with their location accuracy technology, but it was not yet delivered in a way that public safety was supportive of. Fast-forward three years, RapidSOS announced their partnership with Apple and I was sold.
My career in Public Safety began at an Emergency Communications Centers as a 911 telecommunicator, I was promoted to a 911 supervisor, and then I spent nine years as a 911 Coordinator for my county. I knew about 15 years into my career that I wanted to move into the private sector at some point. When that time came, I knew RapidSOS was the company I wanted to work for. I had helped implement RapidSOS and other transitional next-generation technologies in my local agencies and I wanted to be a part of delivering this technology to even more ECCs around the country.
Q: What motivates you to do the work that you’re doing here?
A: I love being able to support and interact with Emergency Communications Centers across the country, training and educating them about how RapidSOS solutions can help them do their job better, more efficiently, and provide better responses to their communities. . It’s really exciting to see the “light bulb moment” and being able to engage them with these new tools RapidSOS can offer. Building relationships and working in Emergency Communications Centers is a lot of fun; it is great to be back in the ECC after being away for so many years. Also, being able to learn and understand what other solutions we can provide to agencies that will better help them do their job, then being able to deliver what they want, is one of the best things about working here.
Q: What is your favorite part about working at RapidSOS and on the Public Safety team?
A: I love building relationships with the agencies and telecommunicators, and learning from them because they have such valuable experiences to share. Working on the Public Safety Team at RapidSOS is nothing short of amazing. I am surrounded by some of the best and brightest 911 leaders in the industry. Collectively, we have over 450 years of public safety experience on our small team, which means we are able to use that externally to support our agencies and internally to provide insight for our solution. If I don’t know the answer to something or have experience in a specific area, then it is guaranteed that someone else on our team does. There are many days I stop and have to pinch myself to see if it is true that I have the privilege and opportunity to work with such a remarkable group of people, both in and outside of the public safety team. We truly have some of the most talented and brightest team members in the industry at RapidSOS.
Q: How has RapidSOS helped you reach your goals?
A: Being at RapidSOS is very empowering and motivating. One of my longtime personal goals was to get my NENA ENP (Emergency Number Professional) certification, but I had put it off for many years.. It was because of the support and encouragement of my director, Karin, who encouraged me and others to study and take the test, that I followed through with it. It’s really great to have the support of leadership that will encourage growth and opportunity for employees and provide valuable mentorship.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the coming months at RapidSOS?
A: I’m really looking forward to some normalcy like traveling and attending conferences again, and interacting face-to-face with telecommunicators and everyone from the 911 industry. I am also really excited to share with agencies some of the new features and solutions we will be offering in RapidSOS Portal.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I love traveling! My husband and I love going everywhere, but find ourselves in Florida often enjoying the beach and pool. When I am home, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, coffee with a girlfriend or two is a routine weekend activity, and my husband and I spend as much time as we can with our favorite 5 year old grandson!
