Family Road Trip: Expectations vs. Reality

There’s a certain time that comes around every summer: The kids are done with camp but school doesn’t start for a few weeks. For many families that means one thing… road trips are on the horizon!

You may be thinking, “The kids are older now, this roadtrip will be way better than the last one,” or “what could be more fun than driving cross country as a family?” Well…

Expectation:

You’ll get the car checked before you go so nothing will go wrong.

Reality:

You get a flat tire, your car overheats, or you lock the keys in the car.

Expectation:

You will get an awesome new photo for this year’s holiday card.

Reality:

There is no one around to take the picture and you try to take a selfie.

Expectation:

You’ll stop at awesome local food joints and produce stands on the side of the road.

Reality:

Your car is littered with wrappers from the most embarrassing array of fast food places. You are too lazy to drive the extra 10 miles to the best authentic burrito in the state, and you just get Taco Bell.

Expectation:

You’ll be able to show your kids the raw beauty of the country.

Reality:

They are on their iPads and phones the whole time.

Expectation:

You’ll get to know each other better, share things you haven’t before, and find a new appreciation for one another.

Reality:

The kids begin to bicker after literally 5 minutes on the road, and it continues for the next 5 days.

Expectation:

You won’t get sick of driving 10 hours a day at all.

Reality:

Your road rage is worse than ever.

Expectation:

You’ll stay at cute Airbnb’s and quirky motels.

Reality:

Last minute Airbnb bookings are a pain and you are unsure about the cleanliness of sheets in those “quirky” motels.

The Bottom Line

So not every road trip is actually this bad. But the point is that often, reality is different from what we might expect. “That could never happen to me,” isn’t always true. When life doesn’t go exactly as expected, RapidSOS Haven is there to help keep your family safe.
