RapidSOS is partnering with GeoComm to provide public safety agencies that use GeoComm 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) mapping systems with accurate location and additional data from the RapidSOS Clearinghouse.
Read on for:
The RapidSOS Clearinghouse is a NENA i3 compliant Location Information Server (LIS) and Additional Data Repository (ADR) that is accessible to authorized PSAPs through integrations into all major call-taking equipment, mapping software & CAD products.
Through the RapidSOS Clearinghouse, PSAPs can securely access device-based location information from enabled smartphones without the need for the caller to use an app, resulting in faster and more accurate location than Phase 2 information currently available.
The RapidSOS Clearinghouse directly integrates into the GeoLynx Server mapping product (versions 8.18.3 and higher).
To demonstrate the impact of the GeoComm RapidSOS Clearinghouse integration, we performed comparative location testing at the city of Frisco in North Central Texas in December 2016. Over the course of the test, 15 test calls were placed to North Central Texas Council of Governments 9-1-1 system, predominantly from indoor environments. Location from mobile native 9-1-1 calls was captured through traditional 9-1-1 location mechanisms and was compared to device-based hybrid handset location sent to RapidSOS.
“To come in to the Center and see the calls plot from the Carrier’s perspective and compare it to this new technology was – wow. Our telecommunicators have learned to live with close enough and they always have to verify location. Now to see a dot show up exactly where the caller is – it’s pretty amazing.” – Christy Williams, Director of 9-1-1, NCTCOG
What’s special about this pilot testing is that there was no app involved. Calls were made by dialing 9-1-1 on a regular phone dialer and improved location information was transmitted in the background. Combined with GeoComm’s indoor mapping solution, this meant that the call-takers and dispatchers could see where the caller was located, even inside of buildings. Knowing not just what building the caller is in, but which room inside the building – that “dispatchable location” is the holy grail of 9-1-1 location.
These were our key findings:
