On June 5th, we announced a data-sharing partnership with Waze, the free, real-time crowdsourced traffic and navigation app powered by the world’s largest community of drivers, to soon provide 9-1-1 Centers connected to the RapidSOS NG9-1-1 Clearinghouse with live incident data from Waze.
RapidSOS Joins the Waze Connected Citizens Program
Through this partnership, 9-1-1 Centers connected to the RapidSOS NG911 Clearinghouse will soon be able to receive live incident data from Waze, providing public safety call takers and first responders with unprecedented information around car crashes. RapidSOS also provides Waze with information on car crashes reported through the RapidSOS Emergency Platform so that oncoming traffic can receive advanced warning.
9-1-1 PSAPs Benefit from Two-Way Data-Sharing
9-1-1 Professionals benefit from this partnership in two ways. First, road incidents reported through the Waze app will be reported through an incident feed to their computer-aided dispatch software. Using this data, call takers and dispatchers will have real-time insight into what drivers on the road are seeing, including the precise location of traffic accidents. Second, Public Safety will also be able to notify Waze users of road closures and incidents through the same interface. Through this tool, dispatchers have a way to redirect traffic away from major incidents and enable a faster response.
The NG911 Clearinghouse Is the One-Stop-Shop for “Next Gen” Data
In our conversations with dispatchers and call takers, we often hear concerns about adding yet another screen to the console set-up that makes it more difficult to process information, and adding yet another data connection to the outside world that elevates cybersecurity exposure. The good news is that neither of those are necessary to exchange data with Waze. The NG911 Clearinghouse is integrated into the existing call-handling, CAD or mapping software (see our list of partners), and uses secured Next Generation 9-1-1 data mechanisms that comply with the NENA i3 standard. Whether it is supplemental device-based hybrid smartphone location, additional data from Wearables, Connected Cars, Connected Homes, or now the Waze incident data — the NG911 Clearinghouse is your trusted provider for additional data.
