Learning to drive comes with many new responsibilities and risks. Whether you’re learning to drive as an adult or teen, there are certain steps that everyone can take to stay safe as a new driver on the road.
-
Never use your phone while driving! Your state may prohibit the use of cell phones while driving and an increasing number of states have laws regarding cell phone use and texting while driving. Studies have shown that using your phone while driving impairs you as much as driving under the influence (even a hands-free device!)
-
Turn on your headlights – even at times when you don’t think you need them, like early morning and dusk. Headlights increase your visibility and help other drivers see you.
-
Never drive too closely behind another vehicle.
-
Stop touching the radio. Make sure you’re completely comfortable driving before adding other distractions such as changing radio stations.
-
Give yourself enough time to get where you’re going. Don’t try to “make up” time on the road. Accidents are more likely to happen when you are rushing.
And make sure you have RapidSOS Haven on your phone (and only use it when you’re pulled over on the side of the road, of course!). We hope you never need to use it – but in case you do, Haven will get help to you as quickly as possible. Get Haven today!
