Wondering what it’s like to be on the Operations team of a rapidly growing start-up? Charlotte Turovsky shares why she wanted to work at RapidSOS, her passion for healthcare, and what she looks for when hiring new employees in this month’s team member spotlight!
Q: Why did you want to work at RapidSOS?
A: I’ve always been interested in healthcare and am very passionate about healthcare improvements that help reduce costs of care and help improve quality of life. I used to think I would be a doctor, but realized my strengths were more in the business world, so I went into healthcare consulting and learned the ins and outs of hospital systems. Even though I enjoyed my work, I realized that change happened really slowly at the company I worked for and with the wonderful, but old-fashioned organizations that hospitals are. So the opportunity to be at a start-up was really intriguing to me and I was really hoping that I could effect change in a way that could more quickly impact people’s lives.
Q: Why did you decide to work in Operations?
A: Michael’s passion for transforming the way with think about safety and emergency services initially drew me to the company. I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to help build this team and a strong company culture. I loved the idea of getting to touch every aspect of the business and work with people from so many different backgrounds. No day is ever the same in Operations and that excites me!
Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: There is no one in the organization that I don’t at some point have a reason to talk to. The fact that I get to work with the investors, lawyers, tech team, and business team, is a great way to understand everything that is going on at the company. And I also get to work with Lori (the other half of the Operations team)!
Q: If you could switch jobs with anyone else at RapidSOS, whose job would you want?
A: I don’t necessarily have the skills to do this, but I think that Anna and Jee (our designers) have amazing positions. I love the visual side of things – I was an art history major in undergrad. The fact that they translate the needs of our customers into beautiful and functional products is really interesting to me. They serve as a bridge between the business and technical side of our business and I admire how they are constantly adapting and evolving their work to solve new problems.
Q: What do you look for in candidates for RapidSOS?
A: I look for candidates who not only have the skills to do their job but are passionate about what we are doing at RapidSOS and want to know what they will be responsible for and how that relates to other people’s work. I really look for people who truly want to be a part of this team and help it grow. Great candidates care about our culture and ask good questions.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: When I’m not at RapidSOS, and I’ve found the time to go to the grocery store, I really like to cook and bake. Also, I grew up not too far from NYC so I like to go see my friends and family and meet them at restaurants or museums around the city. I have also more recently volunteered with the SAVI program at Mt. Sinai – it’s a volunteer advocate program where I am on call to go meet survivors at the hospital to listen to them and help them understand their options and legal rights and help them with paperwork.
