For this month’s spotlight, I sat down with Android Developer Josias Sena. Read on to see why he got into tech, what he likes to do in his free time, and more!
Q: Why did you want to work at RapidSOS?
A: Beause we are making a difference here. At all my previous companies we just built apps that didn’t do anything meaningful. At RapidSOS we are actually saving lives and that means a lot to me.
Q: Why did you decide to work as a developer?
A: I’ve always been interested in tech, but when I was younger it wasn’t in a programming way. I have a cousin who has a cousin on his other side of the family who was a hacker. He actually built software that let him buy anything for free online. When I heard this I knew it was illegal, but it got me into learning more about software in general and I realized this is what I wanted to do.
Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: I get to build stuff. My father always worked in construction so I would always see him building and fixing things and I really liked that. When I was in high school I actually built a house from scratch (I was in the carpentry department at a vocational school). It was a one bedroom house with a kitchen, bathroom, and foundation. That’s pretty much what software is—putting together things piece by piece.
Q: If you could switch jobs with anyone else at RapidSOS, whose job would you want?
A: Probably Michael so I can see how it feels to run a company.
Q: How many Android apps have you made? Which app is your favorite?
A: Over 15 apps at least. I recently built a game similar to Candy Crush called Candy Story. My mom plays it and gives me feedback which is cool.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: Program and play with my son. There is this YouTube channel that my son really likes and one time we were on a roadtrip and he was super antsy. Every time we would play videos or music on YouTube he would relax, but connectivitiy in the car was bad so things kept cutting out. After that I made an app that lets him download YouTube videos that he likes so we dont have to worry about connectivity.
