Today I sat down with software engineer Lucas Eager Leavitt to learn more about his experience at RapidSOS!
Q: Where did you go to school and what was your major?
A: Binghamton University, B.S. in Computer Science.
Q: What is your position at RapidSOS?
A: Software engineer focusing on both full-stack web development and backend web services.
Q: Why did you want to work at RapidSOS?
A: When I was looking for a job I wanted a position where I could grow at the company and where I would be building something that would help people every day. RapidSOS can save lives, so that’s basically the definiton of what I was looking for.
Q: Why did you decide to major in Computer Science?
A: I took a computer math course in my sophomore year of high school because I thought that we would learn how to make video games. In the end we didn’t do that, but I fell in love with being able to make something from nothing in a short time.
Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: Probably the people and how committed everyone is to the mission and working as a team to try to solve a problem.
Q: What are you most proud of in your career?
A: The Airbus demo that we did. In just about 3 weeks I built the entire frontend client to integrate with our existing backend and worked alongside people at Airbus as well as with Nick (CTO) on our team to put it all together. Then we had a very successul demo at the NENA conference and a lot of people were interested in what we were doing from that which was awesome.
Q: Outside of RapidSOS, what is the most interesting project you have ever worked on?
A: In my junior year of college I competed at a hackathon in Maryland called bitcamp. Myself and a friend built a web app where you would type in your Twitter handle and it would go through your tweets and it would analyze your mood based on your tweets. Then it would generate a playlist based on your mood. We won a prize for best use of music API.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the coming months at RapidSOS?
A: New office space! But more seriously, I’m excited for all the growth that we are going to have and all the new projects that we are building and will be going out in the beginning of 2017.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I like to hang out with my friends and my dog and I like to play baseball which everyone at RapidSOS seems to hate…I also brew my own beer.
