[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Sirius XM Connected Vehicle Services, the connected vehicle solution provider for over 10 million vehicles across multiple automotive makes and models, and RapidSOS, the creators of the world’s first emergency response data platform, are collaborating to send life-saving telematics and crash data to 911 during vehicular emergencies.
Sirius XM teamed up with RapidSOS to drastically reduce the time to dispatch and time to respond during road accidents.
Protecting lives and improving road safety through telematics
Road safety is a critical aspect of public safety: traffic accidents are the number one killer of people aged 15-29 worldwide, and traffic accidents cost the US over $239 billion annually in property damage, medical expenses, and repair costs. As telematics and crash detection systems advance, however, data exists that can save lives, money, and time.
Sirius XM is at the forefront of this effort, working directly with public safety to bridge the gap between their connected vehicle platform and first responders on-scene. Traditionally, when an accident occurs on the road, 911 is notified when either an occupant or a witness calls for help. This system heavily relies on the caller’s ability to articulate the nature of the emergency, the location, and any other contextual information.
Unfortunately, this system often results in delays in dispatch and response, which in the context of a car accident can sometimes mean the difference between cuts and bruises and much worse. According to a study by the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety, when accident response times are reduced, the probability of fatality considerably decreases.

By linking vehicle and crash data from Sirius XM Connected Vehicle Services’ ACN+ (Advanced Automatic Crash Notification with enhanced services) technology with the RapidSOS emergency response data platform, 911 personnel can be notified quicker and first responders can receive more critical information about the nature and severity of the vehicle emergency before arriving at the scene.
How does it work?
Through its integration with the RapidSOS emergency response data platform, Sirius XM ACN+ can share telemetry data with 911 through RapidSOS Portal and RapidSOS Integrations.
Data is shared immediately when a collision is detected, enabling dispatchers to send help sooner, and getting first responders on-scene faster. Data from ACN+ that can be provided, directly and securely with user consent, to 911 and first responders includes
- Location of the incident
- Airbag deployment status
- Crash impact data: Varies by vehicle manufacturer, but common sensor data points include, front, back, rear and/or multiple impacts, whether vehicle rolled over, and change in speed due to impact
- Occupancy: Number of passengers and their seating position/seat belt engagement.
- Vehicle description: Make, model, color, model year, and VIN
- Driver/passenger data: Personal information such as name and phone number
- Additional data available from RapidSOS for subscribers with linked accounts:
- MedicAlert profile data: Demographic and important medical information selected by members on their MedicAlert IDs.
This information can be sent from any Sirius XM ACN+-enabled vehicle to over 5,200 emergency communications centers nationwide, covering over 90 percent of the population. By becoming RapidSOS Ready, Sirius XM is leading the charge in leveraging the telematics ecosystem to save lives. As 5G automotive technology expands what our connected vehicles can do on the road, collaborations like these help this technology make our roads safer, too.

The next generation of road safety systems: data interoperability
As connected vehicle technologies improve, the road safety systems of the future are rapidly becoming a reality. Cars, trucks, and commercial vehicles are able to communicate large amounts of complex datasets, like crash details, vehicle descriptions, and driver data to a multitude of stakeholders.
These systems can communicate with one another on the road, paving the way for truly autonomous vehicles; they can communicate with public safety officials, enabling faster accident response and safer roads. They can even communicate traffic information, speed, and more with central city planners to help create more efficient and responsive traffic patterns, and ultimately the smart cities of tomorrow.
The core components of these systems is data interoperability – this enables sensors of any kind to share data with stakeholders across a variety of industries, systems, and technologies. Without it, these impressive systems remain siloed from one another. Through the use of 5G and V2X technologies, connected vehicles can leverage the IoT ecosystem to increase scale, efficiency, and usage across the board.
The collaboration between Sirius XM and RapidSOS is a bold step forward in advancing connected mobility, road safety, and ultimately public safety.
