In 2020, RapidSOS introduced Jurisdiction View, a free feature within RapidSOS Portal that provides telecommunicators with a master view of the active 9-1-1 calls within a jurisdiction on one satellite map, allowing Emergency Communications Centers (ECCs) to easily manage requests for service across their entire jurisdiction, while simultaneously accessing incident-specific additional information about callers on one interface.

Since the introduction of Jurisdiction View, the RapidSOS team has continued to make enhancements to the feature to provide a better experience for our users. Read on to learn about the top 3 benefits of using Jurisdiction View.

1. Unlocking situational awareness with a master view of emergencies

RapidSOS Portal Jurisdiction View automatically displays real-time data to help telecommunicators easily manage calls across your region with unprecedented situational awareness.

With the Jurisdiction View dashboard, emergency responders gain valuable situational awareness for emergencies happening within their jurisdiction. With each call answered, telecommunicators may navigate between calls and the vital information associated with each phone number.

Jurisdiction View also simplifies the management of large volumes of emergency calls. Users can search, filter, and prioritize phone calls as they come into the ECC. Call clusters can also show telecommunicators at a glance if there are numerous calls coming in about the same incident. If a call comes in separate from the call cluster, telecommunicators can determine if the call is about another incident and can choose to prioritize that call.

“Jurisdiction View has provided us with unprecedented situational awareness. We had a call come in as a non-serviced initialized call (9-1-1) prefix that you can’t callback, but Jurisdiction View automatically displayed a valid phone number and location. With this, we were able to send officers to the location displayed and the male was transported and saved. Without Jurisdiction View, there would have been no way to access this information and the male may have never been found.”

– Michelle Potts, Communications Manager at Chandler Police Department in Arizona

2. Real-time data for emergencies in the jurisdiction

RapidSOS Portal Jurisdiction View provides access to life-saving location and additional data, including medical profile, alarm, and vehicle crash data, from the RapidSOS Platform.

The Jurisdiction View map will automatically display 9-1-1 calls within an ECC’s jurisdiction, without needing to manually query the caller’s phone number. When a call is selected, the caller’s phone number will be displayed on screen along with their location pinpointed on the map. If the caller is in motion, their device location will automatically and consistently update as they move.

Accurate location, medical history, and ride-share data will be accessible with a click, the moment a call comes in. This supplemental data is crucial for guiding first responders as they allocate resources and administer care. Dispatchers can access all of the information from our trusted data partners through the RapidSOS Platform. As we expand our tech partnerships, even more additional data will be immediately available through RapidSOS Portal.

Automatic call location plotting means that caller location data may arrive on the RapidSOS Portal screen before the call even rings at the center. For the first time, telecommunicators will have advanced knowledge of incidents separate from the 9-1-1 call — information that can be vital before a major incident or during a 9-1-1 call outage.

“Jurisdiction View lets my 9-1-1 specialists and leadership see the “big picture” and rapidly identify exact locations of 9-1-1 calls as they come in. In the past, we had to answer a call and verbally confirm the location from a caller – now the location instantly pops up on Jurisdiction View, often before we even pick up the phone. This saves so much time, and gives us much better situational awareness, and more accurate location information than ever before.”

– Captain Scott Brillman, 9-1-1 Director for the City of Baltimore

3. Continuity of operations during network outages

RapidSOS Portal Jurisdiction View supports the safety and security of local citizens, even when your 9-1-1 system experiences a service outage or a natural disaster.

In the event of a 9-1-1 outage or if the cellular network is not operational, RapidSOS Portal Jurisdiction View can still support the agency’s request for emergency services. Data delivered via the RapidSOS Platform is carrier agnostic and sent via a secure IP connection – this means that all the ECC needs to access available data is an internet connection.

Moreover, RapidSOS Portal’s web-based access provides the flexibility needed for the continuity of operations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many ECCs were asked to evacuate from their centers. With RapidSOS Portal, telecommunicators could remotely access life-saving data and continue supporting calls for service from neighboring facilities or even their own homes, ensuring uninterrupted workflows.

“Had it not been for RapidSOS and Jurisdiction View, we would have been dead in the water, we would not have been able to receive any type (of 9-1-1) call. They weren’t even able to get a call out to the resolution center to get our 9-1-1 calls rerouted because they were down as well. Our team used Jurisdiction View and made call backs to every call they got.”

– Cassie Lowery, Assistant Director of Rutherford County Emergency Communication District, TN
