Q: When and why was RAINN started?
A: Founded in 1994, RAINN is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization and leading authority on sexual violence. We are a dynamic organization comprised of experts in victim services, public education, public policy, and technology. Our team works together to provide best-in-class services for survivors, inform and educate the nation about sexual violence, and improve the public policy and criminal justice response to sexual violence.
Q: What is RAINN’s mission?
A: RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, y in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Q: How can family and friends help a loved one who was a victim of sexual assault?
A: When someone you care about tells you they’ve been sexually assaulted or abused, it can be a lot to handle. A supportive reaction can make all the difference, but that doesn’t mean it comes easy. Encouraging words and phrases can avoid judgment and show support for the survivor. For tips on how to communicate without judgement, click here

Q: What is the most common misconception about sexual assault?
A: Sexual violence affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year, and perpetrators of sexual violence often know the victim. In fact, 7 out of 10 rapes are committed by someone known to the victim.
Q: How do you see the RapidSOS technology helping RAINN’s mission?
A: Haven makes it possible to send important data to 9-1-1 in situations where it may be dangerous or difficult to speak through the “Can’t Speak” function. When it comes to sexual violence, it is vital to ensure that when a survivor needs help, emergency dispatchers are able to reach their exact location quickly and safely. Especially valuable for people in dangerous situations is the ability to reach help discreetly through Haven. You can sign up for RAINN’s newsletter and gain access to one year of Haven.
